Across hundreds of BIS files we’ve seen the same handful of mistakes derail applications across every industry. Avoid them and you’ll cut your timeline by 3–6 weeks.
1. Wrong IS-code mapping
Many products fall under more than one IS. Pick the wrong one and you’ll fund an entire test cycle for nothing. Our senior consultants do IS-mapping before any document is touched.
2. Test report from a non-BIS-recognised lab
BIS only accepts reports from labs in its recognised list. “NABL-accredited” is not the same. Always confirm the lab’s recognition for the specific IS.
3. Inadequate in-house lab
Scheme I mandates in-house testing capability per the IS. Officers cite missing pH meters, missing tensile testers, and missing humidity chambers as the most common audit fails.
4. Mismatched factory address
Application address, GST address, Udyam address and trademark address must all reconcile. A single character mismatch held up a 2024 engagement for 3 weeks.
5. Skipping the mock audit
BMS conducts a full mock audit two weeks before the BIS visit. Clients who skip this step regret it on the day.
6. Outdated quality manual
A 2020 SOP doesn’t cut it. Officers cross-check the manual against floor reality — keep them aligned.
7. Filing under the wrong IS revision
IS codes get amended. Filing under a withdrawn revision is an automatic rejection.
